Questions & Answers

What certifications will I earn?
For new sailors you will earn the American Sailing Association certification for Basic Keelboat. Sailors having prior experience can challenge this requirement and take the more advanced Coastal Cruising certification. For those interested in scuba diving, for an addition fee you can receive your PADI certification.

How many people go on this program?
We have up to eight people aboard our boat. We purposely keep the group small so that everyone has a berth to sleep in and room to move about. Some programs travel in large flotillas; we feel this detracts from the individual attention that we can give each student. Not being part of a large flotilla also gives us the flexibility to change our itinerary to take advantage of what our students enjoy to see or do the most. However, while in port our group does meet up with other students from other programs.

Where do we all sleep?
The boat has for cabins and a large salon area that converts to a double berth. Because of the weather is usually clear and dry, many students chose to sleep out in the cockpit area. In the event it does rain, we have room below for everyone.

Who will be my staff?
Two staff members live with you aboard your vessel full-time. There will be your skipper and first mate who is specialized in diving, Marine Biology as well as sailing. Take a look through the staff section located in the About US section of this site.

Can I call home?
Yes, when we are in port there is access to public phones. If you plan on calling home we suggest you purchase a local BVI prepaid phone card available at many retail stores on the island. You will have access to a phone on average every four days. However, don’t always count on your student to call home. Often activities and beautiful Caribbean surroundings make them forget about calling home.

What's the weather like?
It is surprisingly comfortable in the summer months. The sea temperature is 81 degree Fahrenheit and tempers the air temperature to an average of 83 degrees, with humidity of 87, with a steady trade wind that blow 8- 14 knots it is cooler then south Florida in the summer. When it does rain it only lasts for a few minutes because it is a tropical show traveling quickly through the islands. We do not encounter a complete day of rain.

Do I need any specific immunizations for this program?
No special immunizations are required to visit the BVI. We do ask that all students check that their Tetanus and Hepatitis B inoculations are up-to-date

What about the travel arrangements?
Travel arrangements are made on your own. We provide suggested fights for the purpose of grouping students together. NY area travelers will fly out of JFK Airport on the early morning American Airlines or Jet Blue flight. When making your travel arrangements we ask that students arrive in Tortola before 7:00 PM. It can be risky relying solely on the last flight out to the island for the night. A van will be at the airport to take you to our base at Conch Charters in Road Town.

How much spending money should I bring?
Your meals are all included, however you will need money for souvenirs, food purchased while ashore and transfer from the airport.  We suggests $20 per day.
